The Shepherd's Flock Church Magboro
ATO Architects designs phased church complex with sunken garden and chapel

There were two constraints to the design of this church, located on a corner plot on the outskirts of Lagos state. There was the need to build the structure in two phases which end up in a harmonious whole, and the site being two meters below the new road being constructed which made sand-filling an expensive choice. In phase one, accessed from both roads is a chapel, with a screened porch accommodating overflow on special occasions. This chapel will later become the reception when the 450-seat auditorium with baptistry is complete. Above the chapel are offices and meeting rooms, and the children’s church is housed in the basement with direct access to the play area in the sheltered sunken garden. In phase two, the Auditorium is built above a suite of conference and seminar rooms, dovetailing neatly with the children’s church. The steel supports to the canopy over the overflow porch are modeled after gothic arches and are the single nod to classical church design in this otherwise modern edifice.
