Lagos Airport Hangar for ExxonMobil

ATO Architects designed the proposed Lagos Airport Hangar for ExxonMobil as an integrated aviation facility combining aircraft maintenance, passenger processing, and operational support spaces.

ATO Architects Ltd designed the proposed Lagos Airport Hangar for ExxonMobil as a specialised aviation facility integrating aircraft maintenance, passenger processing, and administrative support within a unified architectural composition. The development brings together a large central hangar for fixed-wing and rotary-wing aircraft, separate passenger and baggage processing facilities, aviation offices, workshops, technical support spaces, and secured staff areas. The planning prioritises operational efficiency through clearly defined circulation routes, segregation of arriving and departing passengers, controlled access between landside and airside functions, and close relationships between maintenance spaces and the aircraft hangar.

The architectural concept was inspired by the idea of aircraft hangars and passenger terminals functioning like factories for processing travellers, luggage, cargo, and aircraft. This informed a simple rectilinear composition of three interconnected elements: the central hangar, passenger terminal wings wrapped around it, and a centrally positioned entrance hall. The resulting design creates a highly functional, secure, and adaptable aviation environment while accommodating future expansion and supporting ExxonMobil’s long-term aviation operations in Lagos.
